The Powdered Metals Industry wiki is established to provide a single, easily editable source for information that will support the development of a proposal to EDA to conduct research on the global competitive structure of the powdered metals industry in the North Central Workforce Investment Area of Pennsylvania.

Follow or create links in the left-hand sidebar to use the resources of this wiki. There is a lot of information on sub pages of the wiki.

Need to know what a wiki is? Check here and here. Basically, though, a wiki is a web site that is group-editable, promotes collaboration, and helps to avoid e-mail proliferation and overload.

Some features of the Powdered Metals Industry wiki:

  • Access to this wiki is restricted to people with need for documentation and information about the study we are proposing to EDA. The wiki is not public. Know anyone who should have access to this wiki? Contact Passmore.
  • Anyone (that's you!) with access to this wiki may edit any page of the wiki using simple editing commands. Just press the "edit" button at the top of any page. The editing pallette uses buttons that are similar to those used in many word processing programs. But, need help? Point to and click on the "Help" pages linked at the top of each wiki page. See information that needs to be added? Do it. Corrections necessary? Make them.
  • Don't want to revise a page, but have comments? Follow the link to "Post a comment" that is available at the bottom of most wiki pages.
  • Have documents to share? You may attach a small-sized document to a wiki page. However, if you have large documents, transfer them to Passmore. He will upload them to another server. We have a limit on the space we have available for this hosted wiki.
  • Do not to use e-mail to revise or comment on wiki pages. Revising pages on the wiki and posting comments to the wiki avoids e-mail proliferation.
  • Anyone with access to this wiki may create an additional wiki page. Just press the "Add sub page" button in the left-hand sidebar of the wiki.
  • Because this wiki retains page version history, it is difficult to destroy wiki pages permanently (although someone might find a way!). If a wiki page is deleted in error or corrupted in some manner, a previous version of the page can be retrieved and installed easily.
  • Maintaining version history ensures that we all are working with information and documents that are the most current.

This Wiki is a great way to stay in touch. Thank you, David for taking the time to set it up! As luck would have it, our timing could not have been better for last week’s meeting. On Monday, North central is holding its first PM meeting with a small group of industry leaders to discuss the $130,000 grant that they were just awarded to form a PM Industry Partnership. I will be at the meeting to briefly discuss our EDA proposal and the Porter’s five forces model of competition. My goal will be to get members of this group involved in the next meeting (hopefully February) to hold a detailed conversation. Per Mike’s suggestion, I’ll see if I can steer some of the partnership monies towards our assessment. I’ll update the group on Tuesday…

John, when do you have your meeting on Monday?

We had a good meeting today (12:30 mtg, sorry I missed your question David). The majority of the conversation surrounded training needs, since the monies they currently have are earmarked for training. They had me on the agenda to discuss the EDA proposal. I gave the big picture overview of our conversation during our conference call and I did get a chance to slip in that we might need assistance with a match on the grant. They invited us to the next meeting to talk about the proposal and next steps as a partner. The next meeting is Tuesday, February 19th at 12:30 which includes lunch. I will not be available that Day, but John Blasdell from our office is. We should probably schedule a call or meeting to discuss who will attend on the 19th. I will also schedule a plant tour through at least one, hopefully two PM facilities that morning. The majority of the non-training conversation surrounded the challenge of R&D ($ and resources), over capacity due to the loss of market share among the big three, and product conversion / new markets. Essentially, the industry needs to innovate. They need improved materials and processes, which will allow them to enter into markets that they currently cannot compete in… Who are the next customers for the PM industry???

John, thank you. I sent a note to our group to determine availability on 19 Feb.

Hi, I am on the WIKI now (thanks david).

I cannot make the afternoon of the 19th, i have OEWD interviews that afternoon.

have we considered inviting the North Central folks as part of the WIKI, they would benefit also from the conversation.

I think we can put together (from an EDA view) a good looking proposal to complement the State Industry partnership monies with Federal EDA monies. While they can essentially operate independently of each other, they can be complementary to both entities and really help the industry, complement the Tri County KIZ and help bring PSU DuBois to a leadership role in P/M in Pennsylvania.

Thanks.

Mike...it would be wise to engage with North Central using the WIKI. From an immediate perspective, we are currently developing a quick assesment for the WIB to determine need in the following areas for the pm industry sub-cluster. They include as follows: Managerial Leadership, Supervisory Leadership, Business Growth, Continuous Improvement, Engineering Technology, and Powder Metal specific. There are approx. 55 topical areas to choose from. The assessment will be put on JOT form and send out electronically to our data base. Ultimately, we want to prioritize training needs for the WIB so programming can be identified and implemented before 6/30.

More to come on the results...

I’ll work to coordinate a tour or two and send a tentative agenda for the 19th by the end of this week.

Dr. Passmore...I will be able to attend the meeting scheduled for February 19th.

I have coordinated the plant tours around our 19th meeting at North Central. The first tour will take place at Metaldyne in Ridgway with Bob Tami at 11:00 AM. Following the tour the group will travel to North Central to have lunch and attend the meeting (that agenda will be worked out during the meeting on the 15th). Following the meeting, the group will travel to St. Marys for a 3:00 PM tour at Horizon Technology with Eric Wolfe (Eric will prove to be our biggest ally and most influential member of the PM group). After that tour, the group will travel back to State College. I suggest that the people attending the 11:00 AM tour, meet John Blasdell at the DuBois Campus (DEF Building, 2nd floor) at 10:15.

Folks...sorry for being out of the loop the last week. As John Piccolo conveyed, all those attending the plant tour and meeting @ North Central can meet on the second floor of the DEF Building on campus around 10:15. We'll then proceed to Metaldyne Ridgway for a plant tour. After the tour, we'll head to North Central for the lunch and meeting. We can then make way to Horizon Technology in St. Marys.

Please contact me if you need directions to the DuBois campus.

Folks ==> Please edit the pages directlyrather than adding comments to this page. For instance, press the EDIT button at the top of the 19 Feb Travel page and just type in yoru page revisions just as I have (with your name/date/time). Otherwise, we do not provide the info where it is needed on the wiki. Thanks.....David P.
